Govt blamed for GCSE 6,8% pass rate drop

TEACHERS unions yesterday blamed government for the 6,8% drop in the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) 2020 O-Level pass rate.
The unions attributed poor budgetary allocations to the Primary and Secondary Education ministry, which is below 22% of the national budget as stipulated by the Dakar Convention, poor working conditions for teachers as well as poor education infrastructure as having contributed to the low pass rate.
Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) president Takavafira Zhou said: “While the effects of COVID-19 cannot be dismissed in total, the major factors of demotivation and incapacitation of teachers, limited investment in quality public education, poor infrastructural development in rural schools, and useless pedagogical methods of television and radio lessons adopted by government in a situation where more than 75% of students in rural areas had no radio and television frequency, must also be amplified,” Zhou said. ....

Pay employees US dollar salaries, says Chamisa
Nelson Chamisa
HARARE – MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa yesterday said employers must pay their workers in United States dollars, saying they deserve a decent wage.
In a message to commemorate Workers Day, Chamisa weighed in on the raging debate over payment of salaries in the local currency at a time most goods and services are priced in foreign currency.
“Give workers’ salaries in US dollars,” the MDC Alliance leader tweeted.
“Saluting the labour that built up this land and those who work to make Zimbabwe a great country. ....

Govt caves in on salaries - Zimbabwe Situation

Govt caves in on salaries
BY MIRIAM MANGWAYA
PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government has bowed to pressure and agreed to consider another adjustment on civil servants’ salaries after teachers threatened a full-blown strike last week as their employer moved to effect a no-work-no-salary policy.
Last Thursday, Public Service minister Paul Mavima confirmed the development in Senate, saying government was considering another “slight adjustment” to the “staggered 70%” wage offer tabled last month, which civil servants have rejected.
He, however, insisted that the salaries would be in local currency as government had no capacity to pay United States dollar-indexed salaries.
“With regard to salaries, government is working out to ensure that workers are motivated properly, but the workers should also appreciate efforts that are being made by government. According to our revenue at the moment, it is not possible for us to go beyond what we have already o ....

China suspicion, 'foreign plot' fears hamper Africa Covid-19 vaccine plan

JOHANNESBURG (BLOOMBERG) - As if the struggle to secure its meagre supplies of Covid-19 vaccines was not bad enough, Africa is now having a hard time getting people to take them.
Only 5.22 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa -  a region with a population of about one billion - have been vaccinated.
From suspicions about China-made vaccines in Zimbabwe and conspiracy theories in Ivory Coast about Covid-19 being a planned event by foreign actors to Somalia, where the Islamist militant Al-Shabaab group is warning people they are  guinea pigs for AstraZeneca, large sections of Africans are steering clear of vaccines.
Only about 17.5 per cent of the doses available in Ivory Coast and 19 per cent in Zimbabwe have found their way into arms. ....
