Australia Day Award winners announced

Devonport City Council honoured its Australia Day Award winners and new citizens at a ceremony held at the paranaple convention centre today.
Devonport Mayor Annette Rockliff presented the following awards: Community Event of the Year: International Café, Young Citizen of the Year: Oliver Bailey, Citizen of the Year Award: Bruce and Alida Beattie and “Spirit of the City” Award: Dr Thomas Sayers.
Mayor Rockliff also welcomed 11 new citizens to Devonport, who have come from the Philippines, China, Pakistan, South Africa, New Zealand, Chile, and Taiwan.
Cr Rockliff said Council was pleased to present an additional award this year, the “Spirit of the City”, which was introduced some years ago to recognise the outstanding achievement by dedicated and deserving non-residents, who have made a significant contribution to the promotion and advancement of Devonport. ....

Presidents of two Probus Clubs in Belleville plus others in the Quinte area, elected in September are watching their terms spin without meetings as a result of the current COVID-19 pandemic.
One club particularly, the Probus Club of Quinte, had made extensive plans to mark its 20th anniversary last November, including a special speaker, but these had to be scrapped, new president Jim Woodnough says.
The history of the club, as compiled by club historian Elizabeth Mitchell, started on Nov. 2, 2000, making it a true “millennial” organization. Interest was so strong that a general meeting a few days later on the 16th resulted in its formation. ....

Writing off the lockdown gloom

THREE members of Balnarring Men’s Probus Clubs book group came up with a novel idea to keep minds occupied during the pandemic lockdown – a short story writing competition.
The original idea was the brainchild of Bernie Gittins who was then joined by Peter Gerdsen and Dan Hourigan to form an organising group to suggest to club members that might be interested in contributing to a short story competition. The contest would not only keep club members in contact but provide a diversional activity while stuck indoors.
It was agreed to have two sections: One up to 300 words and another up to 1000. ....
