Work to demolish Dias Building in Carlisle underway

LONG-anticipated demolition work is finally progressing well at a Carlisle site that has been considered something of an eyesore for decades.
The Dias Building on Botchergate has stood empty for more than 30 years. Formerly a musical instrument retailer, current owners Persimmon Homes confirmed plans to demolish it in February.
A spokeswoman for Persimmon Homes Lancashire said: “Demolition work on the Dias building site is progressing to schedule and we expect to be completed within the next six weeks, allowing South Henry Street to be re-opened to traffic.
“We would like to thank the local community for their patience while the road closure and diversion are in place to enable the demolition to be carried out safely.” ....

Silloth sea garden plans get the council go-ahead

Sea garden plans have been given the go-ahead from the council
Plans for a sea garden in Silloth have been given the green light by the council.
The application submitted to Allerdale Borough Council outlines a vision to provide disadvantaged groups the opportunity to enjoy being in a sea garden overlooking the beach and engaging in seaside reminiscence activities.
The space is also planned as an as outlet for providing an outdoor space for school visits and activities at Silloth Dunes.
The proposed garden would occupy an area previously used as a car park and would require only very minimal modification of existing intact dune habitat and will contain seating, timber decking and sleeper stepping stones with a native species planting scheme. ....

Families make a stand over locked play area at Speckled Wood development

Furious parents whose children have been locked out of their local play area for 12 months have called for the doors to be thrown open.
Families have issued a plea for youngsters to be able to use the park on the recently completed Persimmon Homes Speckled Wood development, between Harraby and Cumwhinton.
The park has been shut for the past year after Persimmon put down grass seed in the fenced-off area around the play equipment.
But residents say they have had enough and that the closure is leading to children having ‘near misses’ while having to play in the street or risking injury by scaling the fence. ....

CONCERNS RAISED by local councillor as a street sign appears to have vanished
A Carlisle councillor has raised concerns for the whereabouts of a Victorian street sign that forms part of a city conservation area.
The Dias building, on the corner of Old South Henry Street in the historic Botchergate, is set for demolition under current plans that have been set in motion by housebuilders Persimmon.
Carlisle independent councillor Rob Betton is now urging for the street sign to be relocated.
It s a historic quarter of the city and it needs to be reerected, he asserted.

Persimmon Homes to help create a 'sea garden' in Silloth

An ambitious project to create a ‘sea garden’ in Silloth for the elderly and those with dementia has received a £1,000 boost thanks to Persimmon Homes.
The funding has been pledged to Creative Horizons Cumbria through the Community Champions scheme, which supports local charities and groups.
Susan Child, director of Creative Horizons Cumbria, said: “Our trained volunteers provide a fun, friendly and engaging environment for people over 70, and those with dementia, to socialise through a range of creative reminiscence activities that invite curiosity, stimulate interest and trigger memories.
“Most people enjoy going to beach and making and sharing memories but older people with mobility issues and frailties do not have this opportunity. ....
