Gallatin County Deputy chosen to carry torch at 2022 Special Olympics


BOZEMAN, Mont. - Gallatin County Deputy Mark Hernandez was selected to be part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run to help open the world Special Olympics in Kazan, Russia in January 2022. 
Hernandez said he has applied for the Olympic torch run for the last three games and was very honored to be chosen this time. 
The 2022 Olympic games will be the first time Hernandez will attend a World Special Olympics and travel to Russia. 
Over the past 17 years, Hernandez has volunteered with the Montana Special Olympics and he said it has been the best part of his job. 
It is so rewarding it is such an amazing program we have in this state of Montana and the best thing about it is when we are doing law enforcement duties every day you don’t always get to interact with the public in a positive manner so when you do get to have some positive aspects of your job and your career is really makes a difference it makes it much more enjoyable and the fact you a ....

'Time to shift gears and slow down': Belgrade school bus driver retiring after 40 years


Belgrade’s Norma Marx is famous for one thing – and beloved for the same.
The afternoon of June 8 will be the last time Marx pulls her school bus into the Belgrade Bus Barn at 17063 Frontage Road.
When she started driving for Belgrade, Ronald Reagan had just been sworn in as America’s 40th president, Prince Charles had just married Diana, and “Raiders of the Lost Ark” was on theater marquees.
Yep, she’s been driving Belgrade school buses for 40 years.
“It takes a certain personality to do what she does,” maintained her boss Scott Lilyquist, which will makes her darn near impossible to replace. “She drives three different routes – the morning route, preschoolers, and the afternoon route.” The next longest-tenured driver has “only” been with the district for 18 years, Lilyquist added. ....

Kristie Olson has been part of the Montana Special Olympics for five decades now—competing for the first time as a teenager in the late 80’s.
Now at the age of 51, this Billings woman is a true veteran of the games.
“I never crawled. I didn t learn to crawl until I was two because I had seizures,” says Kristie.
Life may have gotten off to a slow start, but it certainly didn’t stop her not by any means. ....

BOZEMAN — At Bobcat Stadium you can find Jon and Ben Turner, twins from Big Timber, training for the Special Olympics Montana Summer Games.
“I just love running, I love it,” said Ben.
Growing up, running turned into an outlet for them to utilize their energy.
“They have always had lots and lots and lots of energy and this was a really awesome way to channel it and really help them focus and keep kind of staying on an even keel,” said their mom, Julia. ....

POLSON — Special Olympics athlete Hunter Greenwood from Polson High School lost 66 pounds during the pandemic training for this year’s state summer games: “If I can do it, you can do it,” Greenwood said.
Greenwood is a star athlete for the Polson Pirates. “Actually, I like all my sports: wrestling, football, track and Special Olympics, he explained.
But for this year’s state games, Greenwood will be focused on three main events. “I’m doing javelin, softball and the relay race,” he said. ....
