Association seeks help to save 1812 home of Hawthorne Share RAYMOND — The three-year-long “Save the Hawthorne House” fundraising campaign, launched to repair serious structural damage to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s boyhood home, is entering its last phase. But the campaign still lacks the final $15,000 it needs to reach completion. People can help save the 1812 home by making checks payable to “Hawthorne Community Association,” P.O. Box 185, South Casco, ME 04077. PayPal donations can also be made at hawthorneassoc.com. “Work on excavating the granite foundation has now begun, and from the looks of things it’s a very good thing we began when we did,” said Abel Bates of the Hawthorne Community Association, according to a news release from the association. “The foundation was even worse than we thought.”

Homes made way for levees, floodwalls 7:00 am, Apr. 7, 2021 × Schmidt and Sons Building Movers from Kindred move a home along 5th St. S. in Fargo on Thursday, April 1, 2021. David Samson / The Forum FARGO — The word "flood" hasn't been bandied about much this spring, but 12 years ago the story was different. When the flood that struck the Fargo-Moorhead area a dozen years ago hit its crest on March 28, 2009, the Red River reached 40.84 feet, setting a record that stands to this day. In the flood's wake, the cities of Fargo and Moorhead embarked on flood mitigation steps that continue into 2021, including home buyout programs.
KVRR Local News April 1, 2021 FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — A house on the move early Thursday morning caused some traffic disruptions around town. “It’s interesting,” said Linda Warner, who watched from the street as the house was hauled across University Drive South. “I was looking for something to do this morning anyway,” she laughed. Warner has lived in Fargo for 14 years but says it’s the first time she’s seen something quite like this in town. She’s not the only one interested in the 2,700-square-foot house and garage being hauled from south Fargo’s Lincoln neighborhood to Kindred.
The former Frosty’s Donuts in Freeport is literally on the move. Its former site, in a freestanding building just off Freeport’s Main Street, not far from the L.L.Bean flagship store, has been moved off its foundation. A new foundation has been laid, and related work is being handled by Curtis Custom Carpentry of Durham. The building is owned by the Freeport Historical Society, which is renovating the building as part of a larger makeover of the historic Harriman house and grounds. Well before it was a doughnut shop, the building served as the stable for the Harriman family and is known as the barn. Keith McBride, economic development director for the town of Freeport, calls the historical society’s site a “jewel on Main Street.”
