Migrating warblers sweep into Indiana Dunes fest as falcons hatch in South Bend

Welcome to the height of migratory bird season, a fleeting time when, if you’re observant, you may spy a bright golden warbler in a tree or bush. Mid-May is the heavy traveling season for such songbirds. Several species wear an array of yellow, brown, gray and black feathers — among other palettes — with equally colorful names, including Cape May warbler, Nashville warbler, chestnut-sided warbler and magnolia warbler. Not to forget songs and calls as varied as an orchestra’s instruments. We enjoy this often-hidden spectacle for just a few weeks until they’ve all rushed northward to their summer breeding grounds.

Trine, Black Pine nurture opportunities

We are pleased to learn of the new partnership between Angola-based Trine University and Black Pine Animal Sanctuary in Noble County. As we reported last week, employees and volunteers at Black Pine, an accredited multi-species sanctuary, will enjoy a wider range of professional development and educational opportunities at Trine University as the result of a new relationship between the two organizations. Trine University will offer Black Pine enhanced opportunities to recruit Trine students for internships, open positions and volunteer opportunities. Black Pine also will have the opportunity to share information regarding responsible animal care and access to a broader range of community activities with student organizations, athletics and Trine events.
