Liverpool students force halls named after William Gladstone to be rebranded due to slave links

Woke students have forced Liverpool University to rebrand an accommodation block named after William Gladstone because of his family s links to slavery.
Gladstone Halls will be renamed after racial inequality campaigner Dorothy Kuya, who was the city s first community slavery officer.
But the move has caused fury among members of the faculty, with politics professor Dr David Jeffrey slamming the decision as shameful .
He added:  Liverpool University is shamefully going ahead with renaming Gladstone Hall. Named after one of our greatest Prime Ministers and one of Liverpool s most consequential political exports.
He worked for the abolition of slavery and never owned slaves himself.   ....

Academic blasts bid to remove William Gladstone's name from Liverpool Uni halls over slavery link

A politics lecturer has hit out at Liverpool University s plans to drop the name of former Prime Minister William Gladstone from a building because of his family s links to the slave trade.
The university emailed staff on Tuesday confirming that the plans to rename the Gladstone Hall student accommodation building, which were initially announced in June, are set to go ahead.
They said the decision was being made because of the strength of feeling evoked in our student community by the Gladstone family s historic ownership of enslaved people, and their profiting from the transatlantic trade in enslaved people .
But the move was slammed by university employee Dr David Jeffery, an expert on the history of Liverpool, who said on Twitter that Gladstone was one of Britain s greatest Prime Ministers. ....

Tributes to slave traders and colonialists removed across UK

Last modified on Fri 29 Jan 2021 13.32 EST
Scores of tributes to slave traders, colonialists and racists have been taken down or will be removed across the UK, a Guardian investigation has found, with hundreds of others under review by local authorities and institutions.
In what was described by historians as an “unprecedented” public reckoning with Britain’s slavery and colonial past, an estimated 39 names – including streets, buildings and schools – and 30 statues, plaques and other memorials have been or are undergoing changes or removal since last summer’s Black Lives Matter protests.
The movement to remove contentious landmarks has involved a wide section of society, from schools and universities to private landlords, pubs, churches, charitable trusts and councils. ....
