McKenzie River, How to Build Back Better - The Corvallis Advocate

McKenzie River, How to Build Back Better
May 3, 2021
In Part Three of the series, we look at how the people of McKenzie River are rebuilding, and what difficulties may lie in their way.
The Holiday Farm Fire ignited and burnt through over 173,000 acres of forested land in the McKenzie River Valley in September 2020. Portions of the small, quintessential towns along the river including Blue River, Vida, Finn Rock, and Nimrod were destroyed literally overnight, and over 400 homes were burnt to the ground. As the affected areas are still just beginning to pick up the pieces and rebuild, there are numerous organizations accepting donations to help assist families and communities regrow. One of these organizations is the McKenzie Community Development Corporation. But not everyone in the McKenzie Valley agrees with the projects the MCDC is spearheading.   ....

From Fire And Steel, A Symbol Of McKenzie River Resilience

4:30
Eugene sculptor Jud Turner describes his latest commissioned project: to create a phoenix sculpture from scrap metal gleaned from the ruins of Blue River and other neighboring communities, that will inspire those affected by the Holiday Farm Fire. This audio narrative was produced by KLCC s Brian Bull.
My name is Jud Turner and I’m a professional sculptor here in Eugene. I’ve been welding and working with repurposed materials and assemblage for a good 25 years.
This is a sculpture in progress to commemorate the resilience and strength of the Blue River and McKenzie River area communities that were devastated by the Holiday Farm Fires last fall. It’s a phoenix rising, it’s about 12-13 feet tall, phoenix spreading its wings and rising from the ashes, literally. It’s created out of components that were found and salvaged from burn sites, particularly in the Blue River area. ....

City Club of Eugene: After The Holiday Farm Fire: What Does It Mean To Rebuild (Part 2)

From The City Club of Eugene:
Just over four months ago, the Holiday Farm Fire consumed more than 173,000 acres of the McKenzie River valley.
Forestry resource specialists called it a “total stand-replacement fire,” one that killed all or most of the trees in the affected area, a very rare event in the Western Cascades. For many residents, the past few months have been focused entirely on survival enduring the immediate aftermath and then simply making it through the winter. class= wysiwyg-break drupal-content src= /sites/all/modules/contrib/wysiwyg/plugins/break/images/spacer.gif title= >
For this second City Club program on the Holiday Farm Fire, we turn our full attention to recovery and ask the question: What does it mean to rebuild? Community members and local organizations are adapting to multi-year recovery timelines. Local agencies are working to support recovery, comply with FEMA regulations and flood insurance requirements, and mitigate future disas ....
