Nurses union calls off strike at McLaren Macomb Hospital
The union representing more than 500 nurses at McLaren Macomb Hospital in suburban Detroit called off preparations for strike action against the health care corporation early Saturday morning, saying that they had reached a tentative agreement.
Local 40 of the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) notified the nurses of the settlement through Facebook at 12:53 a.m.

The nurses had voted for strike action by 90 percent on June 29 and the union had sent management a 10-day strike notice on July 18 over inadequate staffing at the hospital over the past year and a half. Nurses have been forced to work at the hospital in the suburban Detroit community of Mount Clemens taking care of as many as six patients at a time. ....

McLaren Macomb Hospital nurses vote overwhelmingly for strike action
Six hundred nurses at McLaren Macomb Hospital voted by 90 percent on June 29 to go on strike when their current contract expires at midnight on July 27.
The overwhelming vote for a strike by the nurses at the 288-bed hospital in the suburban Detroit community of Mount Clemens, Michigan is the result of the drive by management to intensify the exploitation of the staff at the facility throughout the coronavirus pandemic.
While hospital registered nurses (RNs) have made enormous sacrifices and worked with short staffing and extended hours throughout the public health crisis, saving lives and assisting those infected with the virus, the hospital has used the pandemic to increase the financial payoff for top executives of the multi-billion-dollar McLaren Health Care corporation. ....

Some MI hospitals delaying surgeries because of COVID

ANN ARBOR, MI (MPRN) Some Michigan hospitals are postponing some scheduled surgeries as the number of COVID-19 patients they re treating is rising.
In recent weeks the number of COVID patients in Michigan hospitals has increased to the point where hospitals say they re dealing with extremely high hospital occupancy.
A Michigan Medicine spokeswoman says University of Michigan hospitals made the decision to reschedule a small number of scheduled surgeries late this week and next week in order to maintain safe occupancy levels.
Meanwhile, Henry Ford hospital says it’s limiting elective procedures at its Macomb Hospital for the next two days for the same reason. ....
