McDonough County health officials look to prevent COVID-19 case surge


MACOMB (WGEM) As coronavirus vaccine eligibility is set to expand to all Illinois residents age 16 and older on Monday, officials at the McDonough County Health Department say they have plan to get the vaccine to as many young people as possible.
Emergency Response Coordinator Ben Thompson said one part of their plan to is to offer 3,000 doses of the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine to Western Illinois University students on Wednesday and Thursday.
He said the timing couldn t be better as they ve been seeing a spike in the county s COVID-19 cases recently.
Grateful for the state to recognize that cases are increasing among college-age students and the need to get them vaccinated, especially before they go home for the end of the semester, Thompson said. ....

Strong Turnout for Vaccination Clinic in Macomb


Saturday s torrential rains did not stop people from coming out to the COVID-19 mass vaccination clinic in Macomb.
Ben Thompson, Emergency Response Coordinator for the McDonough and Schuyler County Health Departments, said they inoculated more than 400 people.
“Today (Saturday) has gone really smooth. Other than the rain, which I think has deterred some people, it’s been going great,” Thompson said.
The clinic was open to people who live and/or work in McDonough and Schuyler counties.
They received the single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Thompson said they had enough vaccines for up to 500 people. He said the leftovers will be stored in a refrigerator and used either during regular vaccination clinics at McDonough District Hospital’s Health Services Building 1 or during another mass clinic. ....
