Five brilliant and focused musicians, against odds imposed by history and impossibility, have risen to the occasion to create a recording that provides depth, joy and emotional outreach in times of isolation and hardship. Developing their musical voices on the Seattle jazz scene, bassist Ben Feldman and saxophonist Santosh Sharma moved to New York for school and opportunity, while drummer Xavier Lecouturier, pianist Dylan Hayes and guitarist Martin Budde became invaluable creatives in Northwest music circles. Sidelined from various tours last year, the five ended up gathering in Alaska, composing, playing and discovering that as a quintet, the joy of music and creation was rekindled. Out On The Coast (Basset Hound Music): “David Angel is a Los Angeles composer and arranger. He has had a rehearsal band for over 50 years. David spent many years composing and arranging for the Hollywood Film and TV world and later spent many years as a composition professor in Europe. His unique music is described as Gil Evans meets J.S. Bach. Over the years dozens of the greatest jazz musicians on the west coast have been members.The David Angel Jazz Ensemble is a Los Angeles based 13 piece jazz band, “Out on the Coast” is a  TRIPLE CD set and all of the music is composed or arranged by David Angel. The style is described as “Gil Evans meets J.S.Bach” with all 13 musicians playing polyphonic lines. The band members are among the finest jazz musicians on the west coast. The music that the Ira B. Liss Big Band Jazz Machine makes could never be called noise. But it sure is joyful.
On the new album, “Mazel Tov Kocktail!,” the San Diego-based group rolls out a rollicking batch of songs that swings from dizzying big-band showstoppers (“Gimme That,” an original by Andrew Neu) to smoky torch tunes (“You’d Better Love Me While You May,” featuring vocalist Janet Hammer), to dancefloor ready funk (“Bass: The Final Frontier,” featuring famed San Diego bassist Nathan East).
