Mental health resources are crucial for dealing with racial injustice, and teletherapy and mental health apps are offering free therapy for black women.
It s been one year since George Floyd s murder at the hands of law enforcement. As tributes flood news coverage and social media, so does the collective grief surrounding his death.
Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all three counts in April 2021, but there is much work and healing needed. The trauma remains from the racist killings of Daunte Wright and Adam Toledo as well as Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd, and so many others. No trial verdict can restore the lives lost. ....

is honoring the Black women working to make 2021 a better world from an iconic actress who s made massive strides for Black representation on-screen to a therapist whose organization works to promote the mental health of Black women everywhere. These women are true examples of history in the making, and we re honored to share their incredible stories.
In 2014, clinical psychologist Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, then also working as a college counselor, was watching the BET awards show Black Girls Rock when she had the idea that would later evolve into the community she now helms. The annual ceremony honors Black women in different fields from entertainment to medicine, and as Dr. Bradford watched the event, she says she could tell it was bubbling with palpable, inspirational energy.  ....

Everyone deserves access to resources that improve their physical and emotional health. But here s another truth: Black women s wellness needs are not always met. And many health care options fail to speak to the unique experiences that Black people face.
No one fares worse from poor treatment than Black women. In the U.S., Black women have the highest pregnancy mortality rates. During the period between 2014 and 2017, the death rate for non-Hispanic Black women was 41.7 per 100,000 live births in comparison to 13.4 deaths per 100,000 live births for non-Hispanic white women. When it comes to mental health care, Black people, in general, are less likely to receive proper treatment, are more likely to receive poor quality care if they do seek treatment, and are more likely to terminate treatment prematurely compared to their white counterparts. ....
