Starting in July, Suffolk County homeowners who build or substantially renovate their homes will be required to install innovative-alternative septic systems.
The amendment to the sanitary code, which was approved in October, aims to reduce nitrogen pollution that officials say have caused harmful algal blooms, fish kills, beach closures and a decline in the shellfishing industry over time.
Before the law takes effect, the Mattituck Laurel Civic Association is planning to hold a virtual presentation on the new I/A systems on Monday, May 17. ....

The lack of affordable and workforce housing in Southold Town, for years a critical issue facing local officials, has grown far worse since the real estate boom of the past year.
That was the unmistakable message at Wednesday night’s affordable housing discussion on Zoom sponsored by North Fork civic associations. More than 60 people listened in, spoke or passed along electronic questions to the main speakers.
“The issue of affordable housing impacts the entire community,” said Pat Lutsky, co-chair of the town’s Affordable Housing Commission, who participated in the panel discussion. ....

It does to virtually every civic group within Southold Town and they are pressuring the Town Board to take action on house size.
Members of the Orient Association, East Marion Community Association, Cutchogue Civic Association, New Suffolk Civic Association and Mattituck-Laurel Civic Association, appealed to the board during a work session Tuesday, arguing that while each hamlet organization must contend with its own unique issues, house size transcends geographical boundaries.
“We believe that house size limitation is one of the issues among many that brings together many aspects of preserving community character,” said Orient Association president Drianne Benner. “As houses grow incrementally larger, with no constraint or little constant, the nature of that community character that we love is beginning to change.” ....

Proposed shops on Pike Street in Mattituck met with some opposition

Residents weighed in on a proposal to add four new shops along Pike Street in Mattituck during a Planning Board hearing last Monday.
Developer Ed Broidy is seeking to construct a 4,500 square-foot building that would host four retail tenants on the property where a two-story home was recently demolished. The site is just east of Goodfood, a commercial property also owned by Mr. Broidy.
The project, which dates back several years, has faced setbacks after a dispute over parking. Mr. Broidy had argued that he should be able to factor municipal spaces into meeting parking requirements, but the Planning Board disagreed. ....
