Maldives releases eight detained Indian fishermen | Madurai News


Tuticorin: Eight Indian fishermen who were detained by the Maldives authorities on February 24 for fishing in their national waters, were released on Tuesday following intervention of the Tuticorin district administration, Tamil Nadu government’s public department and the ministry of external affairs (MEA).
“The fishermen have set off from Kulhudhuffushi Island, Maldives, at 12.05 on Tuesday afternoon and are expected to reach Tuticorin on Sunday morning,” Tuticorin collector K Senthil Raj said and added that they will be accompanied by the Maldives Coast Guard till they leave their national waters.
The detained fishermen have been identified as S Antony Michael Bharat, G John Samuel, G Antony Arul Raj, T Ganagaraj and A Abisek Raj of T Saveriarpuram, A Antony Rabin of Vellaippatti all from Tuticorin district and S Jebamalai Raj of Narippaiyur and S Irudhayaraj of Kadaladi both from Ramanathapuram district. ....

Wearing specs will not make one unfit for post: Madras HC | Madurai News

MADURAI: Madras high court has observed that a person wearing spectacles cannot be deemed unfit for a post when there is no specific visual standards mentioned in the recruitment notification. Dismissing an appeal by the state, the court upheld a single judge’s order directing to appoint a candidate for the post of sub-inspector of police (fingerprint).
S Durga Devi had cleared the written examination for the post followed by physical measurement endurance test and viva voce. Though she was selected provisionally, she was found unsuitable for the post at the examination done by the medical board consisting of an eye specialist. The test was done in tune with the GO passed by the home department in 2000 fixing the visual standards for testing a candidate without wearing glasses. After making her undergo the test thrice, her candidature was rejected. ....

Fire in Madurai Today: 10 electronic goods shops gutted in Madurai | Madurai News


Officials said the fire was put out by und 2.15am on Thursday.
MADURAI: As many as 10 electronic goods shops on the Town Hall Road in Madurai were gutted in a fire that broke out on Wednesday night. No death or injury was reported.
A fire and rescue services department official said they received a call at 10.45pm. A fire tender from Thideer Nagar station led by station fire officer Venkatesan reached the spot. The fire had already spread to three shops when the first tender reached.
Other fire stations were alerted. Soon, fire tenders and personnel from Meenakshi Temple, Tallakulam, Anupanadi stations reached the spot. In total, six fire tenders were engaged. ....

Drive against illegal liquor sale in Madurai: 45 arrested, 228 bottles seized | Madurai News

MADURAI: The Madurai city police conducted a special drive against illegal liquor sales on Sunday and arrested 45 people. They seized 228 bottles of liquor.
The drive was carried out based on information that liquor was being sold in secluded places before and after the opening and closure timing of Tasmac shops. The bottles were sold at exorbitant prices.
The prohibition enforcement wing police registered six cases and arrested six people while the local stations registered the remaining 39 cases.
Among local stations, Avaniyapuram police registered highest of five cases while Anna Nagar station registered four cases. Vilakkuthoon, Teppakulam, South Gate, Jaihindpuram, Sellur and K Pudur registered three cases each. ....

MADURAI: It is high time that all stakeholders reviewed the mindset that the driver of the bigger vehicle was responsible for road accidents involving big and small vehicles, as seen in a majority of first information reports (FIRs) registered, the Madras high court has said.
The court was hearing an appeal by the Pudukottai transport corporation challenging the order of motor accidents claims tribunal (MACT) that had awarded compensation to an accident victim. The deceased Govindaraju was going to school along with three of his friends, Venkateshwaran, Prasanth and Gowthamanraj on a two-wheeler in Pudukottai in 2011. Prasanth who rode the vehicle attempted to overtake a lorry when a speeding government bus which came in the opposite direction collided with the two-wheeler and Govindaraju died. ....
