Prime accused Nawaz Khan (left) with ganja seized from him MADURAI: In a combined week-long exercise, Ramanathapuram district police along with Madurai city and district police units busted an international drugs racket, arrested 19 people and seized 420 kg ganja they were about to smuggle. Cash worth Rs 29.5 lakh the accused obtained in exchange for drugs smuggled to Sri Lanka, three boats, two four-wheelers, a two-wheeler, 15 mobile phones, a GPS device, a laser light and two weighing machines were also seized from them. Prime accused M Nawaz Khan, 55, of Nehru Nagar in Ramanathapuram has been engaged in smuggling to Sri Lanka and supplying to local drug sellers for over 10 years, while his son Wasim Khan, 27, has been in the trade for six years, police said. It is only a small network that was smuggling to Sri Lanka. Cracking such networks is an ongoing process, Ramanathapuram district SP E Karthik told TOI. ....
Madurai: Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) professor and head of the department of Tamilology Dr B Sathiyamoorthy has been selected for the ‘Tamil Chemmal’ award, which is given annually to eminent scholars for their contributions in the field of Tamil literature by the state government. The award also comprises a cash prize of Rs 25,000. The criteria for the award include number of research publications, ability to organise national and international conferences, and contributions in developing and promoting Tamil literature and culture. Dr Sathiyamoorthy has 98 research publications to his name and has organised around 70 conferences in the last 10 years. He has also published an English-Tamil-Chinese dictionary and 35 books on various Tamil scholars. Photo for representative purpose only MADURAI: Police personnel from the Melur unit of the prohibition enforcement wing (PEW) have seized 9,932 bottles of liquor from a bar functioning without a licence at Valaiyankulam on the Aruppukottai Road in Madurai district. Inspector Ravichandran said the licence obtained by the bar expired last year but it had continued to sell liquor. In the raid that started late on Tuesday evening and went on till Wednesday, the police seized 39 different types of liquor worth Rs 17 lakh. The seizure included 8,430 bottles with 180 ml each, 1,031 beer bottles with 650 ml each, 410 bottles with 375 ml each and 71 bottles with 750 ml each. They seized a total of 2,387 litre of liquor. ....
MADURAI: The Ramanathapuram district police on Monday seized 260 kg of ganja from a house near Kenikarai and arrested a man and his two sons. The accused have been identified as M Navas Khan of Nehru Nagar 5th Street near Kenikarai and his sons, Washim Khan and Abdul Washid. The police searched the house, based info received by district superintendent of police E Karthick. They found ganja stuffed in bags in a corner of the house. Police suspect that the accused could have stocked the ganja to be sent to Sri Lanka. An electronic weighing scale and polythene bags for packing ganja were also seized. ....
MADURAI: The Madurai city police seized more than one tonne of ganja in 2020, said city police commissioner Prem Anand Sinha on Monday. The volume of the ganja seized in 2020 was more than four times of the quantity seized in 2019. Sinha said 273 kg of ganja was seized in 2019 and 138 cases were registered while 1,116 kg of ganja was seized in 2020 and 345 cases were registered. As many as 994 kg of ganja was seized in the second half of 2020 as a result of special drives against ganja selling. It resulted in registration of 285 cases against ganja sellers. Seventeen ganja peddlers were detained under the Goondas Act in 2020, against two people in 2019, the commissioner said. ....
