Biden's Budget Steps up Spending for Criminal Justice Reform | Brennan Center for Justice

Expectations are high for President Biden to prioritize criminal justice reform. Just a few weeks ago, his fiscal year 2022 budget was released, and it includes Justice Department funding for state and local grant programs.
Our analysis has found some $1.3 billion earmarked for reform-related grants, which are one of the main tools the federal government has for spurring positive change at the state and local levels. The number represents a 78 percent increase from the previous year.
Community Violence Intervention and police hiring
Many justice reformers point out that there are effective non-law enforcement strategies for reducing violence. Biden’s budget goes big on one such set of strategies, including $100 million in new Community Violence Intervention initiative grant funds within DOJ and $100 million within the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC). ....

State Court Officials Cite Benefits Of New Laws Affecting The Courts

Tennessee lawmakers passed several key pieces of legislation this year that officials said will improve and impact the state’s court system.
State court officials said, From the creation of new three-judge panel to hear certain constitutional challenges to the expansion of recovery courts and safe baby courts, the new laws allow the courts to modernize and innovate. Several pieces of legislation also focus on improving data collection in the state courts and in juvenile courts, which will allow for data driven decision making and better resource allocation while continuing the Administrative Office of the Courts efforts to be a world-class repository of court data from every level of court in the state. ....
