Millete Birhanemaskel, 39, of Denver, Co. sheds a tear as she thinks about family over in Ethiopia. She moved to the United States from Ethiopia in 1982 and owns the Whittier Cafe, a business that she said is focused on social justice. She still has family in Ethiopia is is concerned for their well-being and safety as a civil war has broken out in the Tigray region where her family lives. Friends can ease mental-health stress


It started about four years ago when Laurel Carpenter and Melissa Humphrey bought matching parkas and then matching comfort shoes.
Soon enough, the nurses/best friends from Grand Junction found themselves with matching chihuahua-print leggings and matching hoodies with fleece-lined pockets in which they carry their matching chihuahuas.
Then came the matching housecoats they exchanged for Christmas — the softest they could find, and also not very fashionable.
“They’re the zip-up kind, long and baggy for when we’re grumpy and cold, and they are ugly and fuzzy and amazing,” Carpenter swoons.
Carpenter, 38, and Humphrey, 37 have been facing the stresses of the pandemic and family challenges as mothers of school-age children, as nurses, as volunteers, as women overwhelmed at times by their own anxiety and panic attacks.
