SPECIAL NEEDS provision in Cumbria is the focus of an ongoing battle between parents and authorities, a registered charity has now joined the fight. Bee Unique, a west Cumbrian charity which seeks to support families of children with autism, has quizzed Cumbrian MPs in a letter on how they are hoping to improve the gap in provision. In the letter, a spokesperson for the charity said: “As our area representatives in Parliament, what is being done to correct the current crisis within our education system for those vulnerable individuals with Special Educational Needs, as well as safeguarding our education system to deal with an ever increasing number of young and vulnerable people being diagnosed with Autism?” ....

A PASSION for helping children with special educational needs and disabilities has driven a student at the University of Chester to achieve outstanding academic success while undergoing and recovering from complex surgery herself. Llinos Edwards, 24, from Wrexham, is currently studying for a master’s in Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) after achieving a first class early childhood studies degree and a postgraduate certificate in autism, all at the University of Chester. Llinos started her university journey while undergoing complex surgery related to achondroplasia, a common form of dwarfism. Due to her determination and academic ability, she balanced medical appointments alongside her work which has proved at such a high standard she was asked to contribute to the latest book by senior lecturer, Dr Chandrika Devarakonda. ....
The iCub humanoid robot enters healthcare facility to be used by children with autism Genova (Italy), 22nd December 2020 - For the first time in the world, the humanoid robot iCub, developed and built by researchers at IIT-Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (Italian Institute of Technology), enters a rehabilitation facility to take part in an experimental therapy to treat cognitive impairments in children with autism spectrum condition. The experimental protocol has been defined by the IIT team Social Cognition in Human-Robot Interaction , led by researcher Agnieszka Wykowska, in collaboration with the rehabilitation team of the Boggiano Pico Center-Opera Don Orione in Genova, a healthcare center specialized in the treatment of various neurodevelopmental conditions. The initial therapy phase involves 50 children and it will last until June 2021. ....
