Coronavirus herd immunity is unlikely, says Manitowoc health officer

MANITOWOC - Herd immunity against COVID-19 is unlikely to be reached, says Manitowoc County Health Officer Stephanie Lambert.
“I think it will be an endemic virus like the flu,” Lambert said. “We will see it circulate the community and it will constantly be popping up with little flares here and there.
That doesn’t mean we’re not going to get back to normal, Lambert continued, but unfortunately COVID-19 will be part of a new normal, just as the flu is part of our normal every winter.”
Lambert and Emergency Services Director Travis Waack presented an update on how the county is continuing to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic to the County Board of Supervisors Tuesday. ....

Coronavirus in Manitowoc: Health Department shifts vaccine focus

MANITOWOC - Manitowoc County Health Department said Thursday it is shifting its focus from mass vaccination clinics to community and employer-based clinics.
The department said the change comes as COVID-19 vaccines have become more readily available. It also said it is working with the Aging & Disability Resource Center of the Lakeshore to vaccinate homebound individuals and those with transportation barriers while other community health care providers continue to focus on mass vaccination efforts.
“Appointments are now freely available throughout the county,” said Manitowoc County Health Officer Stephanie Lambert in a news release. “We continue to encourage people to make an appointment as soon as they are able with any of our local providers.” ....

Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine appointments canceled in Manitowoc

MANITOWOC - Manitowoc County Health Department has canceled all appointments for the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.
The cancellations come after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday issued a joint statement recommending a pause to Johnson & Johnson vaccinations out of an abundance of caution after six people out of nearly 7 million people who received doses developed a rare type of blood clot. All six recipients were women between the ages of 18 and 48, and one woman died. All clots occurred between days six through 13 after vaccination.
The Health Department said all Johnson & Johnson vaccine appointments that had been scheduled for Friday have been canceled. The department also said people who have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and develop any of the following symptoms within three weeks of vaccination should contact their health care providers as soon as possible for evaluation: severe h ....
