On Thursday, July 29, Habitat for Humanity Vail Valley will celebrate with eight new Habitat families as they break ground on the organization’s 100th home in the Stratton Flats neighborhood in Gypsum. This journey of home ownership is a dream come true for families. “Three years ago we launched a robust strategic plan to increase our home building capacity and break ground on our organization’s hundredth home in 2021,” said John Welaj, executive director Habitat for Humanity Vail Valley in a statement. “Thanks to our partners, volunteers and supporters, we’ve achieved this important milestone. Our goal is to continue moving forward, increasing access to decent affordable home ownership opportunities for Eagle County families.” ....
Special to the Daily Habitat for Humanity Vail Valley is now accepting homeowner applications for homes, which will be located downvalley, with a scheduled completion date of 2022. Applications will be accepted until 4 p.m. Sept. 30, 2021. Habitat for Humanity Vail Valley works with partner families, guiding them through the application process. As the county and world begins to reopen, I reflect on the past year. While there were times of uncertainty, anxiety and struggle, it was also a year of growth, resilience, perseverance and hope. Habitat for Humanity Vail Valley, thanks to our many partnerships and generosity, persevered and shifted as we faced the unknown. We pride ourselves on strong volunteer relationships that help us keep costs down as we build decent, affordable homes for families in the Vail Valley. However, when the world got quiet, and volunteers were unable to come to the job site, our business partners were “essential” and showed up for Habitat homeowners. ....
Elyse Howard The high cost of home has been a fact of life in Eagle County for years and it’s just as much of a problem around the United States. Advocating for policies that will increase access to and supply of affordable homes in our community is an important strategy. Through our five-year Cost of Home Campaign, Habitat for Humanity is focused on finding collaborative solutions and promoting policies to improve access to affordable homes for 10 million individuals nationwide. Housing affordability is one of the biggest issues facing our state. According to Shift Research Labs, one in seven Colorado households spend more than half their income on housing. No matter the region rural, resort, urban and suburban between 2012 and 2019, Colorado fell from being one of the most affordable states to one of the least affordable states in the country based on median income to median pricing, according to Colorado Association of Realtors. ....
Daily file photo It feels like we’ve been stuck in our houses for a year probably because we have been. There’s no time like the present to spring clean now that the world is opening up and days are getting longer. Habitat Vail Valley ReStore is looking to help de-clutter and spruce up local homes. The ReStore funds Habitat for Humanity Vail Valley’s mission to build decent, affordable homes. So when you donate a coffee table and your neighbor buys it, the proceeds go back to building homes right here in Eagle County. In addition, the Habitat ReStore Vail Valley strives to be a sustainable partner, which includes providing GreenSheen paint made out of recycled paint or keeping waste out of the landfill (5,042 tons in 2020 alone). ....
