MACOMB TOWNSHIP For National Foster Care Month in May, the Diegel family celebrates being together, just like any other month.
Childwelfare.gov, a service of the Children’s Bureau, Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, indicates that the month is an initiative led and promoted by the bureau.
It estimates that more than 423,000 children and youth are in foster care across the U.S.
Since November 2016 in Macomb Township, the Diegels Jody, Allen and their four children have fostered three siblings. ....

Ma’Khia Bryant was charging at two young women with a knife, police body camera video footage shows, when an officer arrived and fatally shot her outside the foster home she had been living in for about two months.
Ma’Khia’s foster mother Angela Moore, who wasn’t home at the time, said the dispute stemmed from an argument over a messy house and an unmade bed between Ma’Khia and some of Moore’s former foster children who had come to the house to throw Moore a birthday party. At least two of the women involved in the altercation were adults ages 20 and 22, according to a police report. ....

Kentucky continues to rank first in child abuse, neglect cases

For a third consecutive year, Kentucky’s child abuse rate has outranked the rest of the nation, and local child advocates continue to urge the public to raise awareness on the issue.
This year, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Children’s Bureau released its “Child Maltreatment 2019” report, which stated that Kentucky had more than 20,000 abuse and neglect cases in 2019. Kentucky has the highest child abuse rate in the country for the third year in a row.
The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Children’s Bureau “Child Maltreatment 2019” report released this year shows Kentucky had more than 20,000 abuse and neglect cases, meaning approximately 20 out of every 1,000 children in the commonwealth experienced some type of child maltreatment. By comparison, the second-highest state (West Virginia) had a rate of 18.7 per 1,000 kids. The U.S. average is 8.9.
