On July 18 workers at the Foster Farms chicken processing plant in Compton, California voted down a contract proposal by the company that would have slashed their health care benefits. The last contract for the 250 workers at the plant, many of whom are paid the hourly minimum wage for Los Angeles County of $15.00 per hour, expired last year, but had been extended by the Teamsters union.

The plant, located in an impoverished and dilapidated working class neighborhood in Los Angeles County (with household incomes of under $30,000), employs immigrant and black workers, who have few other options for employment. There is a permanently placed sign on the front of the plant offering jobs, suggesting a large turnover. ....

California cites poultry company and four of its staffing providers for Covid violations

The California Department of Industrial Relations cited Foster Poultry Farms Inc. and four staffing agencies for Covid-19 violations at a location in Livingston, California.
It noted that it opened an inspection after being notified that an employee had died from Covid-19 complications. The department reported that it determined Foster Farms and one of its staffing agencies did not timely report the Covid-19 fatality as required.
In addition, the department conducted a separate inspection at the facility’s distribution center.
Citations were issued as follows:

Cal/OSHA cited Foster Farms $103,100, for five serious, one repeat regulatory, and two regulatory violations at its Livingston plant; and $78,400 for three serious, one repeat regulatory, and two regulatory violations at the distribution center. Regulatory violations were issued in both Foster Farms inspections and to Human Bees, Inc. for their failure to timely report work-related fatalities. Additionally, Cal/OSHA issued serious violations related to their Injury and Illness Prevention Programs many of which stemmed from failing to properly communicate, assess, correct, and train on COVID-19 workplace hazards. The third serious violation at the plant was cited for a blocked eyewash station. ....

LIVINGSTON, Calif. California has cited and fined a Foster Farms chicken processing plant that saw a deadly coronavirus outbreak last year, saying the company failed to protect its workers.
The state Division of Occupational Health and Safety s penalty of $181,500 is one of the steepest citations issued during the COVID-19 pandemic. $103,100 of the penalty was for five serious violations, one repeat regulatory violation, and two regulatory violations at the Livingston plant. The other $78,400 was for three serious violations, one repeat regulatory violation, and two regulatory violations at the distribution center. ....
