Good Shepherd Humane Society Adoption Center sent several dogs and a few cats to a shelter in Michigan last week.
Cole Wakefield, director of animal operations, said the adoption center transported 12 dogs and five cats to the shelter as part of an incentive from Best Friends Animal Society. One of the dogs was the last long-term dog at the adoption center, Wakefield said. He said the transport will allow the animals to find homes where there’s a shortage in animals available to adopt. ....

    Michigan (WNEM) While many people experience a sense of shock and awe during 4th of July celebrations, it’s often not the same exciting experience for pets.
Some pets end up terrified and run off in their attempt to get away from the noise. Because of this, missing pet reports typically increase this time of year.
“It’s huge. Animals are terrified of the sounds. You know they can’t make sense of them,” Beth Wellman, director of the Humane Society of Midland said.
Wellman said she wants everyone to know that animals and fireworks don’t mix. ....

MDARD grants will help animal shelters, new pet adopters | News, Sports, Jobs

LANSING The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is proud to announce the recipients of the 2021 Animal Welfare Fund grants. This year, MDARD will distribute $137,144 to 24 registered animal shelters throughout the state to support various animal welfare projects.
The Animal Welfare Fund is supported by generous Michiganders during tax season when they check the fund’s box on Form 4642, Voluntary Contributions Schedule on their state tax returns.
Since 2010, MDARD has distributed more than $1.4 million to over 213 local animal shelters. 100% of the contributions made to this fund go directly to these shelters to support efforts that increase sterilization rates among dogs and cats prior to adoption, provide anti-cruelty training for animal law enforcement agencies, offer proper animal care programs to the public, and assist shelters with the unreimbursed costs of care for animals i ....
