Manhattan Beach parents throw second Kids Need Classrooms! rally

More than 100 parents, teachers and concerned citizens showed up for a rally at the Manhattan Beach City Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 24, to protest the pace at which the Manhattan Beach School District is resuming on campus instruction.
The “Kids Need Classrooms!” rally was organized by a group of the same name and is the second event of its kind, following a rally in November that included a speech by Manhattan Beach resident and actor Vince Vaughn.
Kids Need Classrooms! was co-founded by Tiffany Wright, a parent of three Manhattan Beach school children and founder of the South Bay Open Schools Facebook page.  ....

The pandemic in Manhattan Beach was met with an uneasy mixture of community cooperation and outright defiance in a year in which the city’s conflicts would mirror the nation’s. 
Manhattan Beach by year’s end will have experienced four deaths and more than 750 COVID-19 cases, a lower incidence than most of Los Angeles County and much of the United States, but by global metrics a higher incidence rate than India, Russia, and Peru. Yet the city found itself in the regional and sometimes national spotlight as the pandemic progressed, first when a surfer was fine ....

March 1973 was a time of disarray. The Watergate scandal was engulfing the Nixon Administration and the last American troops were about to leave Vietnam. Pink Floyd’s
Dark Side of the Moon had just been released, speaking to the sense of desolation taking hold of society. Meanwhile, the Russian lunar rover Lunokhod 2 began its third round of exploration around the actual moon’s surface, just as NASA ended its own manned missions, which had once seemed to signify the endless possibilities of America, itself. 
Meanwhile, on March 12, a tall, dapper young man arrived at Manhattan Beach City Hall. The city was in the midst of pulling itself out of the rubble of the 1971 earthquake, so City Hall was housed in a collection of trailers. Henry Mitzner had just left a short career as an engineer in the aerospace industry, which was in a tailspin. He had worked odd jobs, gone to night school to become an accountant, and come to Manhatta ....
