Analyzing short strands of cell-free DNA in urine could help detect early-stage cancer

Analyzing short strands of cell-free DNA in urine could help detect early-stage cancer
Urinalysis has long been a staple of physical exams to detect and manage a number of diseases and disorders, but not cancer. What if it were that easy, though, and cancer was detected in its very earliest stages when the disease responds more favorably to treatment and improved outcomes are more likely?
That was the question posed by scientists at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), an affiliate of City of Hope, who have found a way of zeroing in on early-stage cancer by analyzing short strands of cell-free DNA in urine. Their study s findings were published today in the scientific journal ....

Parexel, NeoGenomics partner on oncology genomics project

Parexel, NeoGenomics partner on oncology genomics project
The two companies will work to advance precision cancer medicine by harnessing genomics data in trial design, recruitment, site selection and other areas
Clinical services specialist Parexel has entered a strategic partnership with NeoGenomics, a cancer-centric genetic testing and research firm, with the intent to collaborate on ways to use genomics data to improve clinical trials and drug development. The collaboration will seek out ways to advance precision medicine in oncology clinical trials through the application of real-world genomic data to improve patient matching, trial design, site selection, clinical development and translational research. ....

Study outlines the reasons to test pediatric cancer patients for inherited genes

Study outlines the reasons to test pediatric cancer patients for inherited genes
Because cancers in children are rare, many details about their biology remain unknown. In the field of cancer genetics, there s a limited understanding of how inherited genetic changes may contribute to the formation and growth of tumors. Making connections between particular gene mutations and disease requires a lot of data, which until recently has been largely unavailable for pediatric cancers.
Now, tests like MSK-IMPACT
TM can screen tumors for mutations in more than 500 genes as well as analyze patients normal (germline) cells. In the largest study of its kind so far, researchers from Memorial Sloan Kettering s pediatric program, MSK Kids, are reporting germline genomic sequencing details for 751 pediatric patients treated for solid tumors. ....

Combining lipid-lowering drugs and lifestyle interventions may yield greatest heart-protecting benefits

Combining lipid-lowering drugs and lifestyle interventions may yield greatest heart-protecting benefits
Combining healthy lifestyle interventions reduces heart disease through beneficial effects on different lipoproteins and associated cholesterols, according to a study published February 9 in eLife.
Having a healthy lifestyle has long been associated with a lower risk of developing heart disease. The new study provides more detailed information on how healthy lifestyles improve cholesterol, and suggests that combining cholesterol-lowering medications and lifestyle interventions may yield the greatest benefits to heart health.
Cholesterol-lowering medications such as statins help reduce heart risks by lowering levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, the so-called bad cholesterol. Healthy lifestyle interventions, including exercising regularly, having a healthy diet, lowering alcohol consumption and maintaining a healthy weight, have also been shown to lo ....
