Everyone has their priorities. Even as COVID second wave is rampaging across the fear stricken population, the Roads & Buildings department has thought it fit to complete the road widening work at Gandipet by chopping giant decades-old trees, ignoring a pending request from a voluntary body to freely translocate them, on Monday.
“Absolutely devastated to see the trees being chopped after I had appealed to the department to give me time till the first monsoon showers to shift the trees as the climate is not suitable for the translocation. But they seem to be a in hurry to get the hack job done,” bemoaned Vata Foundation trustee P. Uday Krishna. ....

Forest department has slapped hefty penalty on a real estate company which had felled hundreds of trees without permission in Shamirpet mandal of Medchal-Malkajgiri district.
The department has fined Vasavi Green Leaf Ventures a sum of ₹20 lakh for felling more than 300 trees at their site in Bomraspet village, without permission from the Tree Protection Committee. All the felled trees were of teak species, said officials.
The violation came to light about 10 days ago, after which an inquiry was conducted by the District Forest Officer Venkateshwarlu. After the violation was confirmed, the company was booked under the WALTA Act, and notices were served for payment of penalty. ....

Most of the giant decades-old trees on the secretariat premises may not be saved from felling after all.
Vata Foundation, the voluntary organisation, which had offered to translocate the trees, free of cost, has stopped work two days ago after moving about 18 trees to a private land in Shamshabad in huge trailers.
This was in protest against the departments concerned seeking ₹1,000 each for the eight trees by the agency for “illegally” translocating them along with the 10 trees that were officially permitted! ....
