Hanson supports world-first carbon sequestration field trial

2) from the atmosphere.The world-first project by The Carbon Community, a charity dedicated to creating forests and accelerating carbon removal, aims to define a new reforestation approach to accelerate and enhance the sequestration of CO
2 in trees and soil and improve biodiversity.
In May, more than 25,000 trees have been planted on 11 hectares just outside the Brecon Beacons in Wales. The project will assess the effects of using live soils from nearby forests to reintroduce microbes and organisms to increase tree survival rates as well as enhanced rock weathering (ERW) on carbon sequestration. ....

A new green hydrogen power demonstration unit has been developed and installed at Hanson UK s Regen ground granulated blastfurnace slag (GGBS) plant in Port Talbot, south Wales.This is part of the company s GBP9.2m Reducing Industrial Carbon Emissions (RICE) project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The aim of the demonstration unit is to replace some of the natural gas used to power the plant with green hydrogen, which is considered a clean source of energy as it only emits water when burned, reducing CO
2 emissions.
Hanson s Port Talbot plant produces Regen GGBS, which is used as a replacement for up to 80 per cent of the cement in concrete. Although Regen is also an energy-intensive product, using large amounts of natural gas and electricity, its carbon footprint is about one tenth that of Portland cement. ....

Building materials giant Hanson UK has installed a renewable hydrogen generation unit at one of its facilities near Swansea, Wales, to test the potential of replacing natural gas with lower-carbon alternatives.

The unit has been installed at the firm’s Regen ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) plant in Port Talbot. It contains an electrolyser which, powered by renewable electricity generated by onsite solar and wind arrays, splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. The separated hydrogen is then funnelled into the burner used to generate heat for the plant’s processes, mitigating the need for some of the natural gas. ....
