In its recent history, Yosemite National Park has endured storms, fires, and floods. And yet, select sections of the treasured park were no match for the historic wind storm that hit January 18, when gusts reaching speeds of up to 100 mph toppled 15 sequoias and caused nearly $4 million in damages.
In recent years, the park’s battered sequoia grove underwent a 4-year, $40 million renovation courtesy of a partnership between the Yosemite Conservancy, Yosemite National Park, and Save the Redwoods League. The collaboration also yielded a new walking trail to allow visitors more seclusion in the scenic grove. Unfortunately, some of the fruit that the partnership produced—notably, work done on trails, boardwalks, and restrooms—was undone by the storm, Mercury News ....

The Brood X cicada will soon hatch in Michigan after 17 years - what to know

FERNDALE, Mich. - Every 17 years, the Brood X cicada emerges from its underground dwelling to blanket Northeast and Midwest America, including parts of Michigan. 
Every 17 years, the ubiquitous shrill returns as the inch-long bug with orangish-red eyes dig itself out of the ground where it s been feeding on tree sap to search for a mate.

The last time the estimated hundreds of billions of cicadas graced the U.S. with its presence was in 2004. Which means they re expected to return this summer. ....

On Jan. 14, an unseasonably warm and clear Thursday in Yosemite National Park, Anna Horn went for a solo hike up Yosemite Falls. Horn lives close to the park and works as a bartender in the gateway town of Mariposa, allowing her to visit frequently.
Partway up the steep climb to the top of the tallest waterfall in North America, she encountered another solo hiker, a middle-aged Asian woman with a green backpack. ....
