Lewes Crown Court. A TEENAGE thief has been jailed over his role in stealing a man’s motorbike. Jack Jones drove a van while his friend attempted to load the bike into the vehicle in Brighton. The 19-year-old watched as the owner of the Ducati, Michael Brett, realised someone was interfering with his motorbike. He went out to investigate, and the accomplice kicked him in the head and chest. Mr Brett was found by his wife lying on the floor with bruises and cuts, and because of hospital treatment he was not able to start his new business. Later the motorbike was found dumped, and the damage was so bad it had to be written-off.
A PARKING scammer who ripped-off holidaymakers has been ordered to cough-up thousands. Asad Malik was previously jailed for 14 months for conning visitors to Gatwick Airport out of more than £1 million. They looked for cheap airport parking and he lured them in using a picture of a hospital car park in Scotland. But in fact he was dumping cars in a muddy field, costing his customers thousands in repairs. Now, a Proceeds of Crime Act hearing at Lewes Crown Court heard how Malik had gained a £400,000 benefit from his dodgy parking scam which lasted for 20 months. He had assets worth more than £180,000 to be seized to pay back victims, six of whom will get £5,000
Patricia Phillips targeted Tesco stores across Sussex by claiming refunds for items she had never bought. It involved her going into a shop such as Tesco Extra in Shoreham, taking bedding off the shelves, slashing it or damaging it inside packaging, then taking it to a customer service desk to claim cash as if she had purchased a faulty item. At Lewes Crown Court it was revealed she has a 25-year career in making similar dodgy claims. It was revealed Phillips is “known to courts across Southern England” over her “brazen dishonesty”. She admitted criminal damage and fraud relating to Tesco stores at Shoreham, Eastbourne, Lewes, Eastbourne again, and Crawley between May 2 and May 21 last year.
