5th Marianas History Conference kicks off
The theme for the conference is One Archipelago, Many Stories: Navigating 500 Years of Cross-Cultural Contact.
Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero in her opening remarks said 500 years ago the Marianas became the first place in the Pacific to have contact with Europeans because of Ferdinand Magellan s expedition. The contact with the outside world started the Marianas long and complicated relationship with colonization, she said.
Our role in history has often been told the viewpoints of others, with the voices of our people going unheard and our history unseen, she said.
The conference allows for a native perspective to be shared and allows the people of the Marianas to share their stories and ensure their voices are heard, Leon Guerrero said. ....

UOG Press accepts pre-orders Julian for Aguon's memoir

The University of Guam Press is accepting pre-orders for its newest publication, “The Properties of Perpetual Light,” written by human rights attorney, activist, and author Julian Aguon.
Aguon’s memoir weaves together stories from his childhood in the villages of Guam with political commentary about topics from nuclear weapons to climate change.

Muted celebration planned for 500th anniversary of Magellan's arrival

On March 6, the island and the world will commemorate the 500th anniversary of explorer Ferdinand Magellan s landfall on Guam.
But in light of COVID-19 restrictions, the big events that were originally planned won t take place.
Guam expects to welcome the Juan Sebastián de Elcano Spanish navy ship the first week of March.

Next March, Guam will host an anniversary of global proportions, when the hands of time will mark the 500th anniversary of the voyage that Ferdinand Magellan led in circumnavigating the globe.
As part of this anniversary, Spain has undertaken a number of events, most notably a re-enactment in which the Juan Sebastian El Cano, a Spanish Navy training vessel (with traditional sails and rigging) is retracing Magellan’s voyage around the world.
The pandemic has disrupted most of the plains made in Spain, as well as Guam, to commemorate this anniversary. Conferences, exhibits and cultural exchanges have been canceled or gone virtual. There was a possibility that the reenactment itself might be canceled, but we received word recently that it will continue, and that the Spanish will arrive in the first week of March, as originally planned. ....
