Smartphones with an appropriate app show promise as a useful tool in helping to evaluate hindlimb lameness in horses, according to researchers.
Eva Marunova and her fellow researchers, in a study published in the journal
Animals, reported that a smartphone successfully detected pelvic movement asymmetry, with greater levels of asymmetry recorded in horses with a greater degree of lameness.
“Although the use of a smartphone measuring only the symmetry of the pelvis cannot replace a full lameness examination, it presents a useful adjunct to subjective evaluation alone,” the study team concluded. ....

Abstract:  Though the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare warrants genuine enthusiasm, meaningful impact will require careful integration into clinical care. AI tools are susceptible to mistakes and rarely capable of capturing all of the nuances pertaining to a complex clinical situation. Thus, we propose approaches designed to augment, rather than replace, clinicians during clinical decision making. In this talk, I will highlight two related research directions in which we propose i) a transfer learning approach for mitigating potentially harmful shortcuts when making diagnoses and ii) a novel reinforcement learning approach for matching patients to treatments. In summary, there’s a critical need for machine learning in healthcare; however, the safe and meaningful adoption of these techniques will require collaboration between clinicians and AI ....

ACP OKs Add-On Ultrasound for Pinpointing Acute Dyspnea

Apr 27, 2021
Clinical guide green lights point-of-care imaging with standard diagnosis in ED, inpatient settings
Clinicians can use add-on point-of-care ultrasonography in patients with unspecified acute dyspnea in the emergency department (ED) or inpatient setting, according to the American College of Physicians (ACP), although the recommendation is based on a low certainty of evidence.
Combining point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) with the standard diagnostic pathway increased the proportion of correct diagnoses by 32%, boosted the sensitivity of standard testing without “a substantial tradeoff in specificity,” did not seem to be tied to any serious harms, is not a high-cost test, and did not result in a longer length of stay (LOS) for patients, wrote Amir Qaseem, MD, PhD, MHA, of the ACP in Philadelphia, and co-authors on the college’s clinical guidelines committee. ....

Fast-Tracks Medical Research into Real World Decision-Making Tools
NEW YORK | April 14, 2021 – The Rockefeller Foundation announced the creation of the COVID-19 Modeling Accelerator and the first cohort of projects. This new initiative, which is designed to enable world-class academic research, is expanding access to the latest data, critical decision-making tools, and actionable solutions for state and local policy makers, public health officials, medical care staff, and others working to stop the COVID-19 crisis in the United States.
Right from the start of the pandemic, epidemiologists, and researchers across the U.S. jumped into action, developing novel tools, and providing insights to help state and local governments and communities better respond to the unprecedented crisis. During this time, new tools were launched to calculate the optimal number of times students should be teste ....

More People Urged to Get Screened for Lung Cancer

More People Urged to Get Screened for Lung Cancer
March 9, 2021 – More long-term cigarette smokers are urged to get lung cancer screening under new guidelines released by the U.S. US Preventive Services Task Force .
The new recommendations are that anyone age 50 and older who have smoked for at least 20 years should be screened each year. The previous guidelines were for those over 55 who had 30 years smoking.
This is great news because it means that nearly twice as many people are eligible to be screened, which we hope will allow clinicians to save more lives and help people remain healthy longer, said John Wong, MD, chief science officer, vice chair for clinical affairs, and chief of the Division of Clinical Decision Making at the Task Force. ....
