SCV News | Friday COVID-19 Roundup: Masking Indoors Becomes Effective Saturday Night; 28,760 Total SCV Cases

Public Health said the county continues to see alarming trends of increased community spread.
As of July 9, 2021, the 7-day daily average case rate is 8.2 per 100,000, up from 7.1, indicating sustained and increased community transmission. This number will continue to increase with each day that the number of cases reported is higher than the previous day.
Cases are highest and rising the fastest in adults age 18 to 49 years old. Of the new cases reported by Public Health today, 71% are among adults 18 to 49 years old.
There are 452 people with COVID-19 currently hospitalized; a doubling from the 216 hospitalizations reported a month ago.
Today’s test positivity rate is 3.8%. In early June, test positivity was near 0.4%. ....

Monday COVID-19 Roundup: County Sees Increase in COVID-19 Outbreaks; 28,578 Total SCV Cases

On Monday, Los Angeles County Public Health officials confirmed one new death and 1,059 new cases of COVID-19 countywide, with 28,578 total cases in the Santa Clarita Valley. In addition, Public Health reported it is currently investigating 55 ongoing outbreaks which is a 25% increase from the 44 ongoing outbreak investigations reported a month ago.
While the increase in outbreak investigations is concerning, Public Health notes the number of outbreaks is still much lower than the 1,130 outbreak investigations that were reported in mid-February.
Of the outbreak investigations reported today, 20% are related to outbreaks in non-healthcare and non-residential workplaces. ....

California Department of Public Health confirmed Thursday 3,712,152 cases and 63,096 deaths to date. There are 1,090 confirmed hospitalizations and 300 ICU hospitalizations in the state.
Numbers may not represent true day-over-day change as reporting of test results can be delayed.
Note: Some counties are reporting backlogged cases due to data cleaning efforts. The number of backlogged cases varies by county and this is expected until July 2, 2021.
There were 1,698 newly recorded confirmed cases Wednesday.
The 7-day positivity rate is 1.4%.
There have been 69,687,332 tests conducted in California. This represents an increase of 81,601 during the prior 24-hour reporting period. ....

The number of cases and deaths are likely to reflect reporting delays over the weekend.
Delta Variant
With increase circulation of the highly transmissible Delta variant, Public Health strongly recommends everyone, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks indoors in public places as a precautionary measure.
In the week ending June 12, Delta variants comprised of nearly half of all variants sequenced in Los Angeles County.
“While COVID-19 vaccine provides very effective protection preventing hospitalizations and deaths against the Delta variant, the strain is proving to be more transmissible and is expected to become more prevalent,” said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Public Health. ....
