Costa Rica carries out nationwide raids on drug-trafficking gang

SAN JOSE (Reuters) - Costa Rican authorities on Tuesday carried out 40 early morning raids across the Central American country against a major crime organization specializing in trafficking Colombian cocaine and money laundering, a senior official said.
Some 40 properties and 40 vehicles linked to the group were seized in the raid, while 24 people were arrested, said Walter Espinoza, director of Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ).
Espinoza, who spoke in a video statement, did not name the crime organization. He noted, however, that seizures in France and Spain of more than 5 tons of cocaine had been linked to the group. ....

LIMA (Reuters) - Peru’s interim president said on Tuesday there will be “no impunity” for the authors of a massacre of 16 Peruvians in a jungle region known for cocaine production, which authorities attribute to a dissident faction of Shining Path rebels.
“We are doing all we can to deploy the police and the military in a way that we can efficiently combat this plague,” interim President Francisco Sagasti told reporters. “We know this is a rough terrain with many ravines that the narcoterrorists know very well.” ....
