Abuja – Nigeria continues to be a country of origin, transit, and destination of migrants where the media has an influential role in shaping public opinion about migration. Fake news, misinformation and stigmatization have been witnessed before and during the pandemic. As no country is impervious to this ‘infodemic’, fact-based journalism in Nigeria is critical.
On 18 December, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) awarded the winners of the first-ever Migration Reporter awards in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria.
The Migration Reporter competition, funded by the Government of the Netherlands, aims at increasing awareness and improving access to trusted sources of information, and promoting informed decision-making for Nigerians exploring migration opportunities. The competition also aims to showcase rigorous reporting on online and print platforms, as well as video and radio. ....

The migration of persons from one country to another has been very prevalent in 2020.
With the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus, several migrants have been badly hit with issues of shelter, access to health care among a list of challenges.
“Never has there been more migrants in the world than. one out of 7 people in the world are actually migrants. We have way more 1 billion migrants in the world but not all of them are outside their country. Many of them are migrating within their country which is also the case in Ghana,” said Florian Braendli. ....

People see migrants as intruders - Florian Braendli bemoans
Over the years, people could freely move from one country to the other for either business, vacation or to search for greener pastures.
With the advent of modernisation and technology, many people have fine-tuned their minds and are careful who they associate themselves with.
This has become a worry as migrants are mostly seen as pests in the country they visit.
A major concern raised by the Projects Manager of GIZ-IOM, Florian Braendli.
According to him, migrants are seen as intruders in most instances and are to sometimes ill-treated.
One more negative aspect is that people turn to see migrants as intruders which wasn’t the case before, he said at a press conference Friday, December 19 in Accra. ....
