On Wednesday, the MEDC announced Cadillac has been certified Redevelopment Ready.
In MEDC s Region 2, Cadillac joins the likes of Boyne City, Charlevoix, Manistee, Petoskey and Traverse City in redevelopment certification; statewide more than 50 other communities have completed the certification process.
The certification process means the MEDC has given their stamp of approval to steps the city has taken when it comes to planning and zoning to remove traditional barriers and promote opportunities for prospective investors.
Cadillac has done a very deep dive and review of a certain section of city code that otherwise might be generalized as bureaucratic red tape to clear the way for commercial development, City Manager Marcus Peccia explained.

Northfield Township is exploring becoming a Redevelopment Ready Community.
The Redevelopment Ready Communities or (RRC) program through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation is a voluntary, no-cost certification program designed to promote redevelopment strategies through a set of best practices. The RRC certification is a formal recognition that a community has a vision for the future and the fundamental practices in place to get there.
The Planning Commission met virtually on Wednesday night. Member Cecilia Infante is the DDA representative and delivered a report from the Downtown Planning Group, which is a subset of the Downtown Development Authority. She said the DDA discussed some future developments and interest with what happens with the 75 Barker property and the possibility of splitting the property for parking. Negotiations continue between interested parties for a privately owned site that could be developed in the City of Howell.
The City is a Redevelopment Ready Certified community and has been engaging with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation on marketing and development potential for what has been dubbed the Cityâs main priority site. Referred to as the Holkins Lot, itâs a downtown block bounded by Walnut, Wetmore, Center and Clinton. Half of the property is currently owned by the Howell Carnegie District Library and half by local businessman Joe Parker. One of things being looked at is getting both owners to work together and perhaps sell both properties so that a development could come in for the entire block, instead of doing half at a time. However, any project involving redevelopment of the property for a use other than parking will need to address the libraryâs p
