hNEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Saturday refused to stay the counting of votes for panchayat polls in Uttar Pradesh.
The apex court also said no victory rallies shall be permitted during the counting, beginning on Sunday, or after the process is over.
The SC order came after the state election commission ensured that Covid-19 protocol will be strictly followed.
The State Election Commission (SEC) will fasten responsibility on gazetted officers for the observance of Covid-19 protocols at counting centres. Only authorised candidates or agents will visit counting centre, the apex court ordered.
A bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Hrishikesh Roy asked the UP government whether it could identify a joint secretary level officer for each of the 800-odd counting centres to be made responsible for strict observance of Covid precaution protocol, which now includes mandatory antigen test. ....
