A light to guide trees and people: "The Star in the Sycamore" is a broad take on the natural world

When Tom Springer became interested in stargazing, he started walking down the road where he lives in Three Rivers, Michigan, to watch the stars.
He realized a telescope provided him with a limited perspective.
“All that a telescope does is focus on something small and narrow,” he said.
To find something as big as a constellation, you need a broader perspective. And Springer found one when he came across a sycamore tree with branches like a goal post. It is the tree pictured on the cover of his new book, “The Star in the Sycamore: Discovering Nature’s Hidden Virtues in the Wild Nearby” (Mission Point Press, $17.95). MI Notable Books list offers challenging and comforting reads from a difficult year

Every year, the Library of Michigan releases a list of Michigan Notable Books, which features books that are about or set in Michigan or that were written by authors from the state. But in 2020, the selection committee faced a unique challenge: compiling a list of notable works published in a year like no other.

“To be honest, at the beginning of the year, it was hard to see how we even move forward,” said
Tim Gleisner, head of the selection committee and manager of special collections at the Library of Michigan. “We were able to exchange titles, exchange ideas obviously, like everyone else, go virtual on our meetings. But it was definitely more chaotic this year.” ....

Library of Michigan releases 2021 Notable Book Awards | News, Sports, Jobs

LANSING The 2021 Michigan Notable Books, announced by the Library of Michigan, provide a homegrown celebration of Michigan.
The annual list features 20 books, published during the previous calendar year, which are about, or set, in Michigan or written by a Michigan author. Selections span a diverse topics and genres, both fiction and nonfiction.
The latest list doesn’t disappoint, exploring the visionary work of Charlevoix’s Earl A. Young; the contemporary verse of the Anishinaabe; the life of music legend Aretha Franklin; the natural mysteries of our state; and more.
“The MNB selections clearly demonstrate the rich subject matter Michigan offers to writers,” State Librarian Randy Riley said. “Everyone will find something of interest that speaks to their lives or experiences in our great state.” ....
