Researchers have grown 'human embryos' from skin cells. What does that mean, and is it ethical?

Researchers have successfully grown model versions of early human embryos by “reprogramming” cells from human skin. The breakthrough potentially opens up new ways to study the earliest phases of human development, learn more about developmental disorders, infertility and genetic diseases, and perhaps even improve the success of IVF treatment.
In a study published in Nature today, a team led by our colleague Jose Polo discovered that when skin cells are treated in a particular way, 3D structures similar to early human embryos form. A US-Chinese research group led by Jun Wu also reported a similar feat, creating structures that resemble a very early stage of the embryo called a “blastocyst”. ....

India launched its immunisation drive on 16 January with the goal to inoculate 300 million people by July, even though the population remains divided over the efficacy of vaccines.
An array of rumours about the components and potential side effects of coronavirus vaccines have made it extremely difficult for health workers to carry out their task.
Health workers in Nuh, a city in the Indian state of Haryana about 80 km from New Delhi, have been successful in administering coronavirus vaccines to only a small number of locals so far. They have had to individually plead with each person, sometimes for hours, to co ....

Scientists Create Human 'Pre-Embryo' for Research

Scientists Create Human Pre-Embryo for Research
By Dennis Thompson
HealthDay Reporter
WEDNESDAY, March 17, 2021 (HealthDay News) Research into miscarriages, infertility and birth defects is now primed to undergo revolutionary advances, thanks to the creation in the lab of an early stage of human embryos by two separate international teams of scientists.
Both teams were able to use human cells to create artificial blastocysts, an early stage of conception that occurs a few days after egg fertilization but prior to the implantation and development of an embryo in the uterus.
Until now, research into human blastocysts relied on embryo donations from in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures, which were scarce and difficult to obtain. ....

This 'memoir of infertility' tells us what it is like for a woman to keep trying to have a child

This ‘memoir of infertility’ tells us what it is like for a woman to keep trying to have a child
An excerpt from ‘What’s a Lemon Squeezer Doing in My Vagina’, by Rohini S Rajagopal
Author Rohini S Rajagopal.
After the second IUI, I went through two more. But I went about these with a perfunctoriness that came from anger and dejection. Like a sulking child, I went through the motions resignedly, not with purpose or intention. I didn’t even take time off to regroup.
Between December 2011 and February 2012 I had three back-to-back IUIs – all drawing blanks. My uterus did put up a good show each time, producing four to five ripe follicles and a thickened endometrium, but inside I harboured no conviction that it would work – because if the second IUI which had my maximum investment had not brought the desired result, how was anything less going to suffice? ....

Local Doctors Address Misinformation Tied to COVID-19 Vaccine, Infertility

At Conceptions Florida, they receive five to 10 calls a day from patients worried about the vaccine and fertility.
“I’ve been through so much already that I was scared. We didn’t know enough about the virus,” said Natalie Rey, a patient at Conceptions Florida.
Dr. Jennifer Schell, an OBGYN, says she has also received dozens of questions on Instagram about the vaccine. This prompted her to upload posts addressing vaccine misinformation.
As a mother, it is normal to have some hesitation and some fear of something that is new, and it is true there are no long-term studies, but there are also no long-term studies on what this virus can do to your body, Dr. Schell said.  ....
