HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - The Huntsville City Schools Board of Education meeting on Tuesday was not without controversy between Huntsville City Schools and residents of the Blossomwood neighborhood.
The school district is planning to buy the old Clements Church on McClung Avenue.
The $2.7 million purchase comes with a plan to move its central office.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - Huntsville City School Board members voted to approve a land purchase agreement to buy property in the Blossomwood area.
A unanimous vote to approve the $2,750,000 purchase happened at a January 19th meeting.
According to the purchase agreement, the property is owned by Clements Baptist Church, it sits on McClung Avenue near Maple Hill Park.
A spokesperson for the school board confirmed the agreement was executed on January 20th. ....

Pretty pentas make a garden pop

Give your valentine the jewels of the garden, the popular pentas shrub (Pentas lanceolata). These treasures can be admired year after year. The Greek words mean five petals and spear shaped. The leaves are shaped like a lance or spear. This is a bedding plant that comes with flowers the colors of expensive jewels: amethyst, lavender, ruby red, pink tourmaline and white diamonds surrounded by emerald green foliage.
The flowers are grouped in clusters of tiny five petaled blooms. A group of little blooms make a 2- to 4-inch-wide cluster. I like this bloom because it reminds me that although each of us is a separate flower, we are all still connected and thrive by being together. ....

Blooms in winter: Local couple finds unique canvas for art

As an avid gardener, Susan Metzger gets a ton of plant catalogs in the mail.
Late last fall, as she was looking through some of those catalogs, an amaryllis bulb caught her eye. The bulb had been dipped in colored wax. It was priced at $30 or so and supposedly would bloom indoors during the colder months without a container.
âI was fascinated. I was like, âGary, we have to get one of these for your mom,ââ Metzger told her husband, Gary Hauschulz.
Then it dawned on her: âWax. I use wax. Lots of wax! Maybe I could dip them and paint them,â the batik artist thought. ....
