Earlier this month, I read with much concern about the reports related to harmful ingredients like hydroquinone and tretinoin in local cosmetic products.
Unfortunately, this has been happening year in, year out in Malaysia.
Unscrupulous manufacturers and business owners are seemingly unconcerned about the fines and imprisonment that they may face for committing such offenses.
It does not help that some local consumers are indifferent to the health and safety of cosmetic products, according to a recent finding in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, which studied the perception and attitude of Malaysian adults towards cosmetic products during the Covid-19 pandemic. ....

ASEAN countries should invest in ACPHEED, says Dr Jemilah Mahmood


KUALA LUMPUR (March 17): All countries in the ASEAN region are urged to invest in the establishment of the ASEAN Centre for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases (ACPHEED) to fortify regional preparedness and response capacity.
The Malaysian Prime Minister’s Special Advisor on Public Health, Tan Sri Dr Jemilah Mahmood, said it is time for ASEAN to support Japan in the set-up of the centre to benefit the people and economies of the 10 member countries.
Our region should have its own so-called centre for disease control and prevention.thus this is the opportunity since Japan has funded the establishment of this kind of centre. ....

JICA contributes PPE to NADMA to fight COVID-19

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb. 11: The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) today handed over personal protective equipment (PPE) worth close to RM654,000 – which includes isolation gowns, coverall, gloves and masks – to the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) to be distributed to frontliners to fight COVID-19.
Director-General of NADMA, Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim, said the generous contribution from Japan through JICA is a manifestation of strong bilateral ties between Malaysia and Japan and that JICA plays a significant role in supporting the socio-economic development and helping countries in the region to recover from the pandemic.
“NADMA will make full use of PPE and will handover the items to police, army, Civil Defence Force and the People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA) who worked tirelessly during the Movement Control Order period. ....

Kuala Lumpur: The only remaining state to be affected by floods, Sabah recorded a slight increase in evacuees with 445 people from 135 families Wednesday evening compared to 443 people from 135 families Thursday morning.
The Sabah State Disaster Management Committee secretariat said in a statement that all evacuees are housed at six relief centres in four districts, Beaufort, Kota Belud, Papar and Tenom.
Beaufort recorded the highest number of evacuees, with 249 people from 76 families, followed by Kota Belud (129 people from 35 families), Papar (41 people from 18 families) and Tenom (26 families from five families). Overall, 111 villages are still affected by the floods, with rain occurring in several districts, including Kota Belud and Beaufort. ....
