MULTNOMAH COUNTY, Ore. A program serving violence survivors in Multnomah County is getting a boost.
Multnomah County s Department of Community Justice (DCJ) recently received an additional $93,000 to help reach survivors and notify them of updates in their cases.
Last year, the DCJ s Victim and Survivor Services Unit helped 485 people who had been impacted by some sort of violence. Multnomah is one of seven counties in the state that provides survivor and victim services post-conviction. ....

Portlanders Closest to Gun Violence Find City's Latest Solution Lacking - Blogtown

The solution was twofold. First, commissioners passed a $6 million emergency budget package to fund $4.1 million in grants for organizations that support communities impacted by gun violence, with the rest going to the hiring of new crime data analysts and seasonal park rangers to surveil city parks. Second, Wheeler instructed the PPB to reinstate the controversial GVRT under the new name “Focused Intervention Team” without giving PPB any additional funding. Instead, Wheeler asked Lovell to pull officers off their current assignments to staff the 12-person team. The only significant difference between the GVRT and this new team is, for now, a vague promise of a citizen board that could oversee the unit’s work. ....

An Open Letter to the Community on Recent Gun Violence

On behalf of Multnomah County, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, Local Public Safety Coordinating Council, Multnomah County District Attorney s office, Portland Police Bureau, Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, Gresham Police Department, and the Inter-Faith Peace and Action Collaborative, we share a sense of urgency regarding gun violence on our streets. Words cannot adequately describe the immeasurable toll gun violence exacts on families and our community. As of March 8, 2021 there have been 278 shootings in the Portland region; 58 injury shootings, and 17 gun-related homicides.
Gun violence rates continued to increase amid the City of Portland s proactive response to community demands to invest and reexamine historic approaches to gun violence. As public officials, it is our responsibility to work in partnership with the community to galvanize every possible resource to prevent, intervene, investigate, and suppress gun violence. ....
