The planning for a successor to the top office in the Nigeria police is heading for a major test this February as the current Inspector General, Mohammed Adamu retires on attainment of the of 60/35 years of service stipulated by the civil service rules.
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is the principal law enforcement and lead security agency in Nigeria with a staff strength of about 371,800 and a current plan to update to 650,000 by recruiting 280,000 new hands.
Constituting instruments for the Force are: Section 214 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic (as amended) and the Nigeria Police Act 2020. ....

Mr Yunana Y. Babas, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 8 Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, is dead, The Street Jornal has learnt.
According to close sources, the senior officer died in the early hours of Thursday, January 14, 2020, after suffering complications allegedly linked to COVID-19.
Until his death, he headed the zone 8 police division situated in Lokoja.
AIG Babas was lifted from the rank of Commissioner of Police to Assistant Inspector General of Police in November 2019 by the current IGP, Adamu Mohammed, mni.
Similarly, sources with the force revealed that the deceased AIG was being tapped among AIG Dan Bature, AIG DFA FHQ; AIG Hyelasinda Kimo Musa; AIG PMF; AIG Dan Mallam Mohammed, AIG SPU; AIG Mua’zu Zubairu Halilu, AIG CTU; AIG Rabiu Yusuf – AIG ICT and others as possible replacements for IGP Adamu whose tenure is set to expire in February 2021, after 35 years in active service. ....

As top police officers intensified their lobbying to succeed the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, who is billed to retire in February, analysts are wondering if President Muhammadu Buhari will buck the trend by picking a Southerner as his successor.
The analysts, who spoke to THISDAY at the weekend, expressed concerns about the possibility of the president picking another Northerner to succeed Adamu, expected to retire on February 1 having spent 35 years in service, despite the clamour by Nigerians that Buhari should end the domination of Northerners as heads of the nation’s military, paramilitary and security agencies. ....

This Council is chaired by the president and has the 36 state governors, chairman of the Police Service Commission and the IGP as members.
Many insiders say the IGP has President Buhari’s trust
Adamu, a member of the ASP Cadet Course 14 of 1986, is due to retire seven months ahead of his 60th birthday.
He was born in Lafia, Nasarawa State, on September 17, 1961 and enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on February 1, 1986.
The Police Act, signed by President Muhammadu Buhari last year, provides tenure system for the position and reiterated retirement terms as 60 years of age or 35 years of service. ....
