Plea Deal In Place For Mahaska County Supervisor
Mahaska County Supervisor Mark Groenendyk (seated right) was in court Monday for sentencing after pleading guilty to assault.
Oskaloosa, Iowa – Mahaska County Board of Supervisors Chair Mark Groenendyk was in court Monday morning for his sentencing after pleading guilty to a lesser offense of assault, which is a simple misdemeanor.
Rose Ann Mefford was the presiding judge during the sentencing on Monday.
The original charges stem from an accusation of domestic violence and a violation of a no-contact order earlier this year.
The plea reads as follows:
As a factual basis the defendant states that on February 6, 2021 in Mahaska County, Iowa he intentionally made physical contact with another and that such contact was offensive to this person. I was not acting in self-defense when I did this. ....

Mahaska County Supervisors Break Ground On New Radio System

New Sharon, Iowa – The first responders and the citizens of Mahaska County will hopefully soon see the benefits of a new radio system designed to improve communication.
The new radio system has been almost six years in the making, starting with an early steering committee and eventually being developed with the help of engineers in 2017.
The troubles with the radio system were well documented, and eventually, the Mahaska County Supervisors took on the project after some discussion and investigation.
On Monday, the Mahaska County Supervisors hosted a groundbreaking for the new radio system at a site west of New Sharon, which will host one of the three new towers equipped to handle emergency communications throughout the county. ....

Supervisors Table Road Vacation And Hear On Co-Line Expansion
Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Mahaska County Supervisors met in session on Tuesday morning, where they started with a public hearing regarding a road vacation in Section 33 of Jefferson Township.
Concerns about access to properties was one of the first concerns brought to the Board by area landowners.
A motion to continue to public hearing until March 15th, 2021, at 9 am was made and seconded.
The Board also heard from Co-Line Manufacturing as they are looking to expand their manufacturing business in the county’s northwest corner.
Dale Brand, the owner of Co-Line, sat down to talk about the expansion in the past five years and the continued growth of the company. ....

In the opening comments for the E911 Service Board Meeting, Supervisor Mark Groenendyk said he believed a letter sent from the Mahaska County Supervisors to the E911 Service Board was misrepresented. The board has agreed to fund the agency according to the 1991 28E agreement.
According to that document, Groenendyk said he expects the entities involved in the 1991 Agreement to contribute their agreed amount. “The Board of Supervisors will not, however, continue to participate in an illegal funding mechanism. We expected the other member political subdivisions will contribute their fair share as well.” ....

Plans Are Getting Hammered Out To Help Make A Southeast Connector A Reality
Oskaloosa, Iowa – The northwest by-pass around Oskaloosa has been worked on for years, and it looks like those plans will become a reality in the coming years.
Another plan to help traffic by-pass the center of town was a southeast connector when the Iowa Department of Transportation was involved.
Today, the state agency is focused on the northwest by-pass only and won’t participate in the southeast connector.
The local governments made up of the Mahaska County Supervisors and the City of Oskaloosa have been working with the engineering firm McClure to make the pieces fall into place for that project. ....
