25pc garment factories shed jobs despite receiving stimulus: CPD
This is breach of conditions as owners agreed while taking the funds that they won’t lay off workers
Star Business Report
Star Business Report
Twenty-five per cent of garment factories that received loans from the taxpayer-backed stimulus package retrenched workers in a breach of conditions, according to a study of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD).
The retrenchment indicates that the stimulus package could not guarantee jobs as many factories terminated workers. The factories had agreed that they would not lay off anybody while availing the stimulus fund.
The government has allocated Tk 10,500 crore to the garment industry as the stimulus package to help them pay wages and allowances to their workers since the crisis hit the country in March last year. ....

BRAC's steadfast endeavour to break the gender divide

BRAC s journey is almost as long as Bangladesh s. It celebrated the 49 years of its founding on March 21, 2021. International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention C190 and its relevance in Bangladesh

Country Director, ILO, Bangladesh
The ILO Convention Eliminating Violence and Harassment in the World of Work (C190) and its accompanying Recommendation (R206) went through a long process and it culminated in the adoption of the convention in the ILO Centenary Conference in 2019. The Bangladesh government voted in favour of the adoption of the Convention C190 and Recommendation R206 and we are optimistic about the ratification of C190 by the government of Bangladesh. Workers and Employers organisation need to engage to discuss the convention s ratification and figure out how it can be integrated into the national system through legislation to improve practices in addressing workplace violence and harassment.. Without addressing issues around violence and harassment, including GBV in the world of work, it is impossible to achieve the Decent Work Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). ....
