AMHERST A Boston consulting company will assist an advisory group of students, faculty and staff at Amherst College in making recommendations for possible changes to how policing and public safety is provided on campus.
College President Biddy Martin recently announced in a letter to the community that Cambridge Hill Partners of Boston will provide assistance in crafting a revised approach to community safety that can be presented to her and senior leadership by mid-October, and then delivered to college trustees for consideration.
“The advisory committee will be charged with generating options for a community safety model that will support the range of needs within our community and reflect our commitment to equity and inclusion,” Martin wrote in the May 10 correspondence. ....

AMHERST Student leaders at Amherst College, who have been making appeals for disarming the campus police and reducing its size and responsibilities, are requesting that the department be abolished.
Joining the Black Student Union, which led a campus walkout April 13 in response to the police shooting of Daunte Wright in Minnesota, who was killed April 11 at a traffic stop in Minnesota, the Association of Amherst Students is supporting a call for disbanding campus police.
While the student government has not formally made that appeal to the college’s board of trustees, the Amherst Student campus newspaper reported that members indicated during the walkout that they endorse the Black Student Union’s demands. ....

AMHERST Student leaders at Amherst College, who have been making appeals for disarming the campus police and reducing its size and responsibilities, are moving toward a request to abolish the department.
Joining the Black Student Union, which led a campus walkout this week in response to the police shooting of Daunte Wright in Minnesota, who was killed Sunday at a traffic stop in Minnesota, the Association of Amherst Students is supporting a call for disbanding campus police.

Recently, the Rhodes Trust announced the 32 American winners of Rhodes Scholarships for graduate study at Oxford University in England. Rhodes Scholarships provide all expenses for two or three years of study at the University of Oxford in England and may allow funding in some instances for four years. Being named a Rhodes Scholar is considered among the highest honors that can be won by a U.S. college student.
The scholarships were created in 1902 by the will of Cecil Rhodes, an industrialist who made a vast fortune in colonial Africa. According to the will of Rhodes, applicants must have “high academic achievement, integrity of character, a spirit of unselfishness, respect for others, potential for leadership, and physical vigor.” ....
