MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) Three Alabama lawmakers tested positive for COVID-19 this week, a legislative spokesman confirmed Tuesday.
Alabama House of Representative spokesman Clay Redden said three representatives received positive COVID-19 test results this week. He did not disclose the names of the legislators for privacy reasons.
Lawmakers and legislative staff have been receiving regular COVID-19 tests since the session began last month. Lawmakers have been taking precautions such as wearing masks, limiting access to the building and spreading out the 105 House members over two floors.
A number of lawmakers tested positive for COVID-19 before the session began. ....

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - The suspect in a 2017 shooting that critically injured a student at Robert E. Lee High School has been sentenced.
Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey says Quinterrious Norman was sentenced to 20 years in state prison for first-degree assault and discharging a gun into an occupied vehicle.
Norman also received a 10-year sentence for third-degree burglary, theft of a firearm and discharging a gun on school property. Judge J. R. Gaines ordered those sentences to be served at the same time as the assault, Bailey said. ....

FALLS CHURCH, Va. A former Old Dominion University student who joined up with white supremacists in a swatting conspiracy that targeted a Black church, his own university and a Cabinet officer, among others, was sentenced to nearly three years in prison Monday.
The 33-month sentence for John William Kirby Kelley, 20, of Vienna, Virginia, essentially splits the difference between the five-year term sought by prosecutors and the 14-month sentence of time served requested by his lawyers.
Kelley pleaded guilty to hosting an internet chatroom in which he and others called in fake bomb threats and attacks on more than 100 different targets, many of which were targeted because of racial or religious animus. ....

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) Alabama s unemployment rate for January declined to 4.3%, the lowest level since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic a year ago, the state said Monday.
While still well above the pre-pandemic level of 2.7% of January 2020, the rate was better than the revised December unemployment rate of 4.7%. It was also below the U.S. unemployment rate of 6.3% for the month, and Department of Labor said.
Labor Secretary Fitzgerald Washington said the drop to a new low level of joblessness for the pandemic was encouraging.
“While we are still not where we were before this year of massive change, we are making progress, he said in a statement. More people were employed this month, and fewer were unemployed, which is always good news.” ....
