More than a drop in the bucket? New filtration system at Housatonic plant proposed to end water troubles

GREAT BARRINGTON â Housatonic Water Works Co. is proposing a new filtration system that consultants say will rid the network of discolored-water episodes that, for years, have plagued its customers.
In a March 29 statement on its website, the company says it plans to install an âultrafiltration membrane treatment systemâ that would address high levels of naturally occurring manganese at Long Pond, the water source.
The decision to purchase and install the $1.7 million system came after consultant Lenard Engineering studied a number of technologies that remove manganese and said this product from Koch Separations Solutions would be most effective for the cost. ....

Discoloured water in Central Queensland towns is putting bottle-fed babies and pregnant mothers most at risk due to manganese contamination, new research has found.
After CQ University water expert Dr Adam Rose recently studied the potential health impacts of manganese (Mn) in drinking water supplies with fellow academics, he issued this warning.
He said recent research had shown that increased levels of Mn in the system contributed to impacts on pregnant women, infant size and mortality, and intellectual function in children as well as in the elderly.

“If you are pregnant, I would recommend using bottled water, at least until Mn levels have reduced,” Dr Rose said. ....
