A Boston federal court judge on Tuesday is expected to hear oral arguments in a racial discrimination case brought by a group of white and Asian parents who contend that temporary changes to the admission policies for Boston’s highly-regarded exam schools could disadvantage their children.
The arguments come one day after more than two dozen civil rights and other organizations announced they had filed briefs in support of the changes made last fall by the Boston School Committee. ....

Bill Calls For Public Benefits Common App

The number of Massachusetts households receiving food assistance benefits is 26% higher than it was a year ago, and there could be another 700,000 people who are eligible for the aid but are not receiving it, advocates said Monday.
Speakers at a virtual briefing hosted by the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute, Greater Boston Food Bank, Project Bread and Massachusetts chapter of the National Association of Social Workers highlighted a bill that aims to connect that population with nutrition benefits.
Legislation filed by Rep. Jay Livingstone and Sen. Sal DiDomenico (HD 1500, SD 1015) proposes a common application portal through which Massachusetts residents would be able to simultaneously apply for MassHealth, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), cash assistance benefits, veterans benefits, and subsidies for child care, housing and fuel assistance. ....

Eviction has been a hot topic in Massachusetts since the pandemic began.Jim Davis/Globe Staff
Massachusetts will soon receive the deluge of federal money that housing advocates have long said is needed to hold off a devastating wave of evictions.
Now the challenge is getting that money to the people who need it most.
The $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, signed into law Thursday by President Biden, includes more than $21 billion in emergency rental relief, money designed to help struggling renters — and their landlords — keep up with monthly bills. On the heels of $25 billion in similar funds Congress allocated in December, it should, advocates say, be enough to help many tenants stay in their homes, and to stay current for months to come. ....

Boston Housing Authority Extends Eviction Moratorium Though March, But Advocates Say Crisis Still Looms
Tenants rights advocates march to the JFK federal building, Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2021, in Boston. The protest was part of a national day of action calling on the incoming Biden administration to extend the eviction moratorium initiated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Boston Housing Authority has extended its non-essential eviction moratorium through the end of March, but some housing advocates say monthly extensions and legal loopholes doesn’t provide enough stability for the city’s 25,000 public housing residents.
It’s to help all of our public housing residents who may be affected by the pandemic and who are unable to pay rent or get behind. just to make sure that they are safe from losing their homes, Gail Livingston, senior deputy administrator for the Boston Housing Authority. ....

Lawsuit filed against Fall River Housing Authority over development

FALL RIVER  It took more than a decade of legal and political wrangling to raze the 100-unit Watuppa Heights housing project, with promises that the Fall River Housing Authority and the city would redevelop the property for low-income residents.
Over that time frame, a lawsuit was settled and a memorandum of agreement was reached, as was a housing improvement plan between the Housing Authority, the city, the Department of Housing and Community Development and a social justice group on how to redevelop Watuppa Heights.
The 10-acre parcel has remained fenced off, weed choked in the summer and a dumping ground for plowed snow from city streets in winter, since demolition crews took down the 28 blighted Watuppa Heights buildings in June 2013.  ....
