(TNS) Vocational education advocates are urging lawmakers to beef up funding for more retraining programs as a way to help the tens of thousands of laid-off workers get back into the workforce.
Gov. Charlie Baker has proposed more than quadrupling state spending for a career training program, called the Career Technical Initiative, to educate some 20,000 workers for jobs in high-demand trades. As we emerge from the restrictions of the pandemic, it s clear many jobs in food services, health care and hospitality aren t coming back, so voc-tech training is more important than ever. ....

Massachusetts’ education commissioner, Jeff Riley, has proposed changes to vocational-technical school admissions aimed at giving disadvantaged students a better shot at attending the coveted schools.
The proposal, headed for a preliminary vote Tuesday by the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, would erase the current requirement that selective schools consider applicants’ grades, attendance, discipline records, and guidance counselor recommendation ....

Advocates encouraged by proposed changes to ‘discriminatory’ admission policy at Massachusetts vocational schools

Education advocates said they are encouraged to see that Massachusetts education officials are proposing changes to an admissions policy for career/vocational high school admission, but say more clarity is needed to ensure equitable access.
Currently, vocational schools admit students based on criteria of grades, attendance, discipline record and counselor recommendation. Those criteria have been viewed as discriminatory, as advocates say it leads to the exclusion of students of color, English language learners, special needs students and economically disadvantaged.
“Vocational schools are public schools, but they have been allowed to admit students by ranking them. Ranking them by their grades, attendance, discipline and guidance counselor records,” Jack Livramento, of the United Interfaith Action of New Bedford and Fall ....
