PEABODY, Mass. (AP) Plans to build a 55-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant in Peabody have been put on hold as the proposed facility’s owner addresses environmental and health concerns and considers alternate energy options.
The Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Co.’s board of directors voted to authorize a minimum 30-day pause on the plans this week, The Salem News reported Wednesday.
MMWEC called pausing the project, which has been in the works since 2015, “an unusual step.”
“Can we find a way to develop a needed capacity resource that isn’t fossil fuel-fired but still reliable in times of need?” company CEO Ron DeCurzio said in a statement. “It is worth taking another look at whether advancements in technology make a different approach possible today.” ....

Mansfield Municipal Electric Department recently announced that the publicly-owned utility is participating in a new solar project to be built in Ludlow.
MMED will purchase approximately 0.5 megawatt from the 7 megawatt project being constructed on the property of MMED’s joint action agency, the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company. MMED is one of six municipal utility members of MMWEC participating in the project. The others are located in Boylston, Ipswich, Marblehead, Peabody and Wakefield.
The ground-mounted solar project will be built on a 30-acre section of MMWEC’s 200-acre property in Ludlow. The site is well suited for solar. After receiving responses to its request for proposals, MMWEC is working with EDF Renewables Distributed Solutions Inc., as the project developer.
